What are the 7 Major Phases of the Fire Project?

The Philosophy

In light of your four years as a social justice student, you have studied many topics and issues locally, nationally and globally.  Your Philosophy of Social Justice essay should draw upon those learning experiences and articulate how they have shaped your personal definition of social justice.

This statement will provide a clear philosophy and a vision for struggle.  Each statement should be unique.

The Proposal

The proposal phase is a multi-facet approach to brainstorming and narrow down your issue of choice.  The Fire project will require a significant amount of time and energy.  it should be something that each student is passionate and excited about so that they will learn from their educational experience and have an amazing time doing it.

The proposal will have students identify an issue as well as 5 major research questions, which will guide their work.

The Paper

All students will be researching and writing a paper of approximately 8-10 pages, based on their identified area of need.  They will use both primary and secondary sources to gather information for their paper.

The Action

To prepare students to be an independent thinker in a democratic society, students need to be aware of the various issues present in their local, national, and global communities. Every student will be developing an action-based response based on findings of their research paper.  Service not only means helping  their communities, but also engaging in the initiatives of those communities.   This phase of the fire project will lead to a greater sensitivity and participation in each student's community.

Your evidence at the conclusion of the action-based response should accurately reflect the amount of time and effort you spent.  A minimum of 10 hours of verified service is required in order to receive credit of service learning hours.

The Portolio

An online portfolio provies a visual demosntration of required lessons the student learned during each phase of the project.  The purpose of the online portfolio is to document the process of the fire project in all of its dimensions: The Proposal, the research paper, the action, and the presentation.  The online portfolio should reflect each student's growth through the fire project.  Each student will be responsible for developing an attractive, engaging, and information online portfolio.

The Resolution

Resolutions are the centerpiece of the Dream conference.  Each committee delegate or delegate team should come to the conference with one resolution that they plan to present to the committee.  The resolutions will be discussed and voted on in the committee and at the afternoon plenary (general) session.

The Presentation

Each student will be delivering an 8-10 minute oral presentation that describes their research and demonstrates their project in order to display mastery of their chosen issue.  This presentation is done before a review panel, and it is the culminating element to their Fire Project.  This presentation is their chance to demonstrate what they know and what they can do.  Part of the presentation phase includes a comprehensive online portfolio that will display the hard work accomplished throughout the year.
